The Derry Eagles U13 Girls team used stellar defense and exceptional keeper play to take first place in the recent Amherst Memorial Day Tournament. Coach Ray Scott provides the details of the exciting weekend. Congratulations girls!

The Derry U13 Girls soccer team had an outstanding run at the Amherst, N.H. 2010 Memorial Day Classic.

The tournament started with a loss to Nashua (1-0), but was followed by two amazing wins against Ocean State of Rhode Island (6-2) and Hampton N.H. (5-1). This gave the Derry team enough points to win its qualifying group.

The semi-final game against Capital SC of Vermont concluded in a 1-0 Derry win advancing the girls to the finals against the same team they faced in 2009—Litchfield.

Litchfield had not lost a single game in league or tournament play over the previous 11 games. Derry was praised by Amherst referees as having the best defensive line up seen at the tournament this year, forcing dozens of offside calls. This was a tribute to the fantastic efforts by Sara Tridenti, Allison Salema, Hannah Smith and Sarah Burgess. Our goal keeping team led by Rebecca Scott and supported by Haley Psareas and DeLeah Barker was outstanding, allowing only seven goals through and holding off dozens more.

With a fast and powerful forward line led by Taylor Eccleston, Andrea Galvin, Danielle Fischer, Aeriela Thornton, Megan Wilson and supported by Liz Bonilla and Mckenzie Anderson, Derry began the final with an onslaught of shots on the Litchfield goal, completing the first half with 1-0 lead. The second half saw Rebecca Scott (goalie) coming off injured after saving a potential equalizing goal, replaced by Haley Psareas.

Fifteen minutes into the second half, Left Forward Andrea Galvin shot an amazing scoring goal; however she was hit by the goalie and after a game delay of 15 minutes, was taken off by ambulance with an injury to her knee. While reeling in pain, Andrea muttered, “Did I get the goal, Coach? Did it go in?” — a true testament to her commitment. After restarting the game, Litchfield attacked our goal with a newfound focus. But with great saves by Haley Psareas and outstanding defense, Derry held on to its lead and won 2-1.

Head Coach Ray Scott and Coach Bill Fischer were emotionally drained waiting nearly three years for this team victory and were overjoyed handing out team trophies and informing the girls of their other award, attending a New England Revolution game at the end of June for a photo opportunity on the field.

GO EAGLES!

The Derry Eagles U11 Girls have spent the last few weeks embracing the upcoming World Cup 2010 event. The first World Cup game kicks off June 11th and concludes with the final on July 11th. USA plays England on June 12th, for those who may be interested.

Earlier this Spring the girls each randomly selected two of the 32 countries that have qualified for the Wold Cup this year being held in South Africa. For the last few weeks they were given facts to research about their teams, questions about various soccer players, and information about the country itself. They even had fun facts to research, such as which musical artists were performing at the opening ceremonies.

Recently, the team got together and created their own World Cup shirt which displayed one of the country’s flag they had chosen. (Click on image to enlarge.)

Front row (left to right) Kyra Stariknok (Honduras), Rachel Wood (Brazil), Haley Laliberte (Ivory Coast) Back Row (left to right) Evan Duval (Argentina), Mackenzie Donovan (Netherlands), Courtney Velho (South Africa), Julia Bousquet (Italy), Ally O'Neil (Australia), Erica Parent (Switzerland), Gretchen McGrath (Algeria), Melanie Roberge (Mexico), Bailey Kolinski (France), Reanna Romano (Ghana) Missing from Photo, Grace Quaratiello (Spain)

In addition to learning about soccer from around the world, the U 11 Girls have been focusing on their own “World Cup” here in New Hampshire. Each Spring the New Hampshire Soccer Association hosts the State Cup for NH soccer teams to determine the State Champion at each age level. The Derry U 11 Girls decided to participate at the U 12 8v8 age level this Spring. Derry has gone undefeated in round robin play so far and have not had a goal scored against them! They have qualified for the finals which will be held June 6th in Londonderry. Hopefully these World Cup shirts will be adorned with a State Cup Championship medal!

The Derry U11 Girls Soccer team’s impressive Winter season continues. Following it’s first-place finish in a recent indoor Seacoast Nike Tournament, the girls took their act on the road to Marlborough, MA to face premier competition in the Scorpion Bowl Tournament. The Derry U 11 Girls Soccer Team traveled to Marlborough MA to participate in the Scorpion Bowl the first weekend of March. The Scorpion Bowl is a Premier Soccer Tournament which attracts 350 soccer teams from all over New England in March.

The weekend started play on Saturday with a team from Massachusetts called Delta FC. This was the girls’ first match outdoors since October of last year! After some adjustments, the girls squeaked out their first win of the tournament 2-1.

Next up on Saturday was Inter Soccer Club of Boston. For this game the girls had gotten back to their old form from the fall and defeated the Boston team 7-1. On Sunday, the first game was against MPS Lady Knights. They too had won both their games on Saturday and this would be the deciding game for the finals later in the day. The Derry Girls came out strong and sustained this play for the entire game, besting MPS 4-0.

Up next was the finals against another MPS team, the Renegades. Once again the Derry Girls played strong and defeated MPS 3-2 for the win and the championship. Next weekend the Derry Girls will head to Holliston MA to play in the NEFC Tournament.

This spring the girls will play in the MAPLE League. (Massachusetts Premier League). The regular season kicks off April 11th, in Rhode Island, against the Black Watch U 11 girls.
